Which came first 'Topsoil' or 'Sub Soil'?? It's possibly one of the only other examples of 'the chicken and the egg' question, 'Topsoil' or 'sub soil'; which came first?
As Britain's Leading 'Topsoil' Supplier we thought that the question deserved an answer! The immediate answer we thought was that 'Sub Soil' came first, didn't it?
Well, here's the thing, 'sub soil' is called 'sub soil' because it is the layer of soil under 'top soil'... right? And 'top soil' is called 'top soil' because it's the layer of soil on top of the 'sub soil', still with me?
For something to be underneath something else it must have been put there before the thing that went on top of it was created..... But that would mean that if there was no 'top soil' at the time of the earth's creation the 'sub soil' couldn't have been called 'sub soil' when it first came into existence, as it was not 'sub' anything! Therefore the very first 'sub soil' must have actually been 'top soil'.
But hang on a minute 'topsoil' is called 'topsoil' because it is the top layer of soil...right? But if it was the only layer of soil it couldn't have been the top layer of soil because it was the only layer of soil!!!
So does that mean that the first layer of soil was in fact just called soil? Until other matter materialised and became soil at which point the 'soil' became 'sub soil' and the new matter became 'top soil'. In this instance 'top soil' and 'sub soil' would have been created at the exact same time!
It does beg the ultimate question however; how did the very first layer of soil come about? Was it a big bang or did God put it there??
Personally, I don't see how two pieces of rock crashing into each other in the middle of space can result in Dandy's Topsoil being able to source and sell the most amazing substance in the entire universe! Sounds cheesy I know, but a little cheese is good, so think about it!
Topsoil, sub soil, soil, whatever! Without it there would be no plants, no plants would mean no food whatsoever and therefore no us and no anything else that lives! So maybe someone should tell those nice people at NASA they should stop looking for water and start looking for 'topsoil'!
